Painting like Pollock... Like who?

Casa Búho introduces children to Jackson Pollock's action painting technique, combining literature and art in a fun creative session.

At Casa Búho we read every day and that is why we feel that reading helps activate our sensitivity to aesthetics at its fullest expression. That is, we are more attentive to beautiful things, more open to analyzing the beauty of the world, of what surrounds us. Reading, together with illustration, opens the door to the wonderful world of Art.

Trish, our Peace Corps volunteer, who worked for more than 20 years as an art teacher at a school in the United States, proposed introducing the kids to a special painting technique.

She told us about Jackson Pollock, a very famous painter known for his way of working and one of the greatest exponents of abstract expressionism. He gave meaning to what is known as action painting. He freed himself from the easel and placed his canvas on the floor, painting through movement. His works lacked specific forms or real drawn objects, yet they were full of emotion, energy, vitality, and movement…

And that is precisely what we wanted to recreate with the children of Casa Búho. So we prepared ourselves and started painting like Pollock.

At first, our painters were not so sure about what they were doing, but after a couple of attempts they let themselves go and began to paint. In the background, old-time jazz was playing. There were several colors mixed with a bit of water. On this occasion, they were yellow, red, blue, and purple, and thanks to the movement of the children’s arms and hands, the colors began to travel from one side to the other on a blank sheet of paper. Wonderful works of art came out of it.

Mixing Literature with Art is a phenomenal idea!
