A two-week environmental workshop at Casa Búho covering plastic pollution, microplastics, waste management, bioplastics, and a beach cleanup minga.
Over the past two weeks, I have been leading an environmental workshop in collaboration with another volunteer. We analyzed various aspects of pollution, focusing specifically on the dangers of plastic waste in the environment and in the sea. The course began on Monday with a two-hour introduction. Luna provided the participating Chiquiturris with important information about the dangers of marine debris, with a focus on plastic. Together we made turtles and whales and “decorated” them with junk, with many impressive results as the final product.
In den vergangenen zwei Wochen habe ich, in Zusammenarbeit mit einer anderen Freiwilligen, einen Workshop zum Thema Umwelt geleitet. Wir haben uns mit verschiedenen Aspekten von Umweltverschmutzung beschäftigt und uns speziell auf die Gefahr von Plastikmüll in der Umwelt und im Meer konzentriert. Der Kurs begann am Montag mit einer zweistündigen Einführung. Luna hat den teilnehmenden Chiquiturris wichtige Informationen zur Gefahr von Müll im Meer vermittelt, mit dem Fokus auf Plastik. Gemeinsam haben wir Schildkröten und Wale gebastelt und diese mit Müll “dekoriert”, wobei viele beeindruckende Ergebnisse das Endprodukt waren.
On Wednesday, we then focused on the topic of microplastics. We watched a video and, with the help of a poster, informed participants about how long plastic takes to decompose and what consequences it has for sea animals and also for us humans. We examined various cosmetics for microplastics and filtered them using coffee filters. At the end, we went together to the beach and sifted microplastics from the sand.
Am Mittwoch haben wir uns dann dem Thema Mikroplastik gewidmet. Wir haben ein Video angeschaut und mithilfe eines Plakats, die Teilnehmenden informiert, wie lange Plastik zum Zersetzen benötigt und welche Folgen es für Tiere im Meer und auch auf uns Menschen hat. Wir haben verschiedene Kosmetika auf Mikroplastik untersucht und mithilfe von Kaffeefiltern gefiltert. Am Ende sind wir gemeinsam an den Strand gegangen und haben Mikroplastik aus dem Sand gesiebt.
On Thursday, the topic was how to deal with waste. We raised awareness about trash and read the book “El marinero Eusebio - Héroe del océano” about rescuing marine animals that had eaten garbage. I bought the book in Ayampe in exchange for a donation. It was recycled and illustrated by children. That fit perfectly with our theme. We analyzed waste classification and disposal in Ecuador and talked about the devastating consequences of waste incineration. Our conclusion was that we need to produce less waste. The focus here was on the 3 R’s rule: recycle, reuse, and reduce.
Donnerstag ging es dann um den Umgang mit Müll. Wir haben das Bewusstsein für Müll geschärft und passend dazu das Buch „El marinero Eusebio - Héroe del océano” über die Rettung von Tieren im Meer, die Müll gefressen haben, gelesen. Das Buch habe ich in Ayampe gegen Gabe einer Spende gekauft. Es war recycelt und von Kindern illustriert. Das passte genau zu unserem Thema. Wir haben uns mit Müllsortierung und -entsorgung in Ecuador beschäftigt und über die verheerenden Folgen der Müllverbrennung gesprochen. Unsere Schlussfolgerung war, dass wir weniger Müll herstellen müssen. Die Regel der 3 Rs - Recycling, Reutilisieren und Reduzieren - standen hierbei im Fokus.
On Monday, we covered the topic of bioplastics. We analyzed the importance and the difficulties of defining bioplastics and discussed whether they represent a real alternative or simply a new problem. Recycling was also an important topic here. Participants were asked to reflect and decide how they see the situation.
Am Montag beschäftigten wir uns mit dem Thema Bioplastik. Wir haben uns mit der Bedeutung und den Schwierigkeiten der Definition von Bioplastik beschäftigt und diskutiert, ob es eine echte Alternative oder nur ein neues Problem darstellt. Auch hier war Recycling ein wichtiges Thema. Die Teilnehmer sollten reflektieren und entscheiden, wie sie die Situation sehen.
On Wednesday, we launched a joint beach cleanup by the sea. In South America, this is also called a MINGA: a gathering of friends and neighbors to work together and then enjoy a meal. Everyone had a trash bag and picked up whatever came into their hands, and that was no small amount at the beach. We combined this action with small final games by the sea. As a thank you, we were treated to a snack by the Hotel Hostería del Parque. What a great reward!
Mittwoch haben wir dann eine gemeinsame Mülllsammelaktion am Meer gestartet. In Südamerika wird dies auch MINGA genannt - ein Treffen von Freunden und Nachbarn, um gemeinsam zu arbeiten und anschließend eine großzügige Mahlzeit einzunehmen. Jeder hatte eine Mülltüte und hat gesammelt was ihm/ihr in die Hände gekommen ist und das war am Strand nicht allzu wenig. Wir haben diese Aktion mit kleinen abschließenden Spielen am Meer verbunden. Als Dankeschön wurden wir vom Hotel Hostería del Parque zu einem Snack eingeladen. Was eine tolle Belohnung!
Then, Friday was the big final project, for which we worked together with an artist. Together we painted a wall with a moving motif and integrated some of the garbage collected from the beach. Everyone helped and created a great final product. The artwork was displayed at the local soccer field in Ciriales, where many people will see it to remind others that we don’t throw away trash, in order to protect the environment, the animals, and ultimately, humans.
Am Freitag war dann das große Abschlussprojekt, für das wir mit einem Künstler zusammengearbeitet haben. Gemeinsam haben wir eine Wand mit einem aufrüttelnden Motiv bemalt und Teiles des gesammelten Mülls vom Strand integriert. Alle haben mitgeholfen und ein tolles Endprodukt erschaffen. Das Kunstwerk wurde am Fußballfeld im Ort in Ciriales ausgestellt, wo es von vielen Leuten gesehen wird, um auch andere zu erinnern, dass wir Müll nicht wegwerfen, um die Umwelt, die Tiere und letztendlich auch uns Menschen zu schützen.
Overall, the course was a great success. Participants learned a lot and had a lot of fun doing it. We have shown that each of us can contribute to protecting the environment. It is important that we become aware of how our actions affect the environment and that we strive to reduce, recycle, and reuse our waste.
Insgesamt war der Kurs ein großer Erfolg. Die Teilnehmer haben viel gelernt und hatten großen Spaß dabei. Wir haben gezeigt, dass jeder von uns einen Beitrag zum Umweltschutz leisten kann. Es ist wichtig, dass wir uns bewusst werden, wie unser Handeln die Umwelt beeinflusst und dass wir uns bemühen, unseren Müll zu reduzieren, zu recyceln und wiederzuverwenden.
