At Casa Búho, we drive programs and effective experiences in working with families that help us apply approaches and methodologies promoting well-being, development, and resilience within the family unit. These programs are designed based on scientific evidence and best practices, and their goal is to strengthen families’ capacity to support the comprehensive development of their members, especially children.
These programs are effective when they are adapted to the specific needs of each family, are culturally relevant, and are designed to generate sustainable results.
Implementing effective programs and experiences in working with families at Casa Búho has a significant impact on the community. We adapt them to the local context to make them more effective. At Casa Búho, we offer:
Parental education programs
Respectful parenting workshops Sessions for mothers and fathers where they are taught communication strategies, behavior management, and how to foster the emotional and cognitive development of their children. We include topics such as positive discipline, family stress management, and the importance of an affectionate environment.
Family reading sessions We promote the habit of reading at home by organizing workshops where parents learn to tell stories or read aloud to their children. In addition to fostering reading, family bonds are strengthened.
Talks on nutrition and child well-being We offer talks explaining how nutrition and emotional well-being influence child development, helping parents create healthy routines for their children.
Support interventions
Psychological and emotional support We seek to collaborate with local psychologists or volunteers to offer psychological support to families in vulnerable situations. Providing them with emotional resources and tools can help them overcome challenges.
Community support networks We encourage the creation of support groups among parents who attend Casa Búho. These groups can meet regularly to share experiences, ideas, and advice about parenting and family well-being.
Guidance for social services If there are families that need additional help (financial, mental health, etc.), we seek to provide guidance on how to access social services available in the community or at the governmental level.
Community participation experiences
Family community activities We organize family events such as art days, reading sessions, or outdoor activities that involve parents and children. This can help families build stronger connections with one another and with the community.
Family volunteering We involve families in Casa Búho projects. For example, parents and children collaborate in organizing events and maintaining the foundation’s space, strengthening their sense of belonging and commitment.
Early intervention programs
Early detection of special educational needs We seek to work with child development specialists who help identify learning or developmental issues in children from an early age. Offering personalized support to families so they can work at home with their children is key to improving outcomes.
Early stimulation at home We teach mothers how they can carry out sensory and motor stimulation activities with their babies and toddlers at home. We organize workshops where primary caregivers learn practical exercises to promote their children’s development.
At Casa Búho, reading has always been the central focus of our activities, as we firmly believe in its transformative power. To enhance this approach, we have implemented initiatives that encourage families’ active participation in the reading process. One of these initiatives is the creation of parent-child reading clubs, where parents not only read alongside their children but also participate in activities related to the stories read, strengthening family bonds and stimulating children’s cognitive and emotional development. Scientific evidence supports this approach, as various studies have shown that shared reading between parents and children not only improves language and reading comprehension skills but also strengthens the emotional bond between them (Bus, van IJzendoorn & Pellegrini, 1995).
Another key initiative is the take-home book program, through which we lend books to families so they can enjoy reading in their home environment. Afterward, we organize discussions at Casa Búho to talk about the stories read, which not only encourages critical thinking but also promotes a reading culture beyond the foundation’s space. This type of program has proven effective in various contexts, as studies such as that of Mol and Bus (2011) have shown that repeated exposure to reading at home significantly increases children’s vocabulary and narrative skills. These initiatives not only contribute to children’s academic development but also reinforce families’ commitment to the education and well-being of their children.
