Baby Búhos: Grasping Objects, the Beginning of Everything

The Baby Búhos session was absolutely lovely. Three of our beautiful babies joined us: Joaquin, Susan, and Elian, along with their mothers.

The workshop exercise focused on hand coordination when grasping objects and their gaze — that is, where our baby looks and where they place their attention. According to experts, being able to grasp things is the first step toward many other important future actions like playing, eating on their own, writing, and more. That’s why we decided to practice at Casa Búho and got right to work.

Trish, our Peace Corps volunteer and art teacher, made some mobiles (like crib mobiles) with objects we found in our little toy cabinet. So, various colorful things were tied to long sticks at different distances.

We laid the babies down under the mobile and they began to explore, to grasp… Here, each mom had to pay close attention to her baby and everything they did: Which hand did they grab with? Did they use both? How long did they hold that object? Did they pass it from one hand to another, or did they let go and then grab it again?

We repeated and observed this exercise several times. It was beautiful to see the moms so attentive to their babies’ movements. While all this was happening, we had delightful music playing in the background — very suitable for babies :) Here’s the playlist on Spotify

Then we had our playtime where everyone explored the objects around them and on the floor, but of course, still very close to mom. Before ending the session, our ritual: a little foot massage for our baby owl. We always remind the moms that physical contact with our children — a caress, a hug, a kiss on the forehead — strengthens the bond between them. And as always, we said goodbye with bubbles.

See you at the next session!
