'And Hair?' A book about cancer

The United Nations designates February 4 as a day to reflect on the fight against cancer.

When cancer reaches a home, it hits hard. And we must admit it: sometimes explaining these kinds of situations to children can be a very difficult mission. However, literature can be the path that leads us to answer questions and helps us try to understand these unexpected events that produce profound changes throughout the entire family.

‘And Hair?’ is a book that portrays this reality. The day-to-day life of a mother with this illness who, despite everything, goes to the supermarket, cleans the house, plays with her daughter. And alongside her battle against the disease, she must also talk about it with her little girl.

Sue Glader, author of this book, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 33, and her son was, at that time, only 1 year old. Glader completed her treatment and was able to overcome the disease. But she also had to address her young son’s questions and speak to him honestly (because that is how you should talk to children).

Now, with her work, she tries to send a message of courage to those who must go through this situation. This book, in my opinion, goes beyond being a powerful tool for talking about this illness with young children. This literary work honors all those who fought, those who are in the battle, and those who have survived cancer.
